Chapter 89
89 – Great Conference
Continental Mage Council
It was the largest magical organization and academic conference that spanned all continents.
Magic is divided into numerous systems and schools. Only wizards who made outstanding achievements in the specific major called ‘industry’ in vulgar terms, or who were recognized around them for their outstanding learning, could join the Continental Mage Tower Council. No matter how many of these numbers you catch, it’s just spirit.
Being an Associate Member of the Council is considered to be a sign of academic recognition, as membership qualifications are extremely strict.
Of course, the Leoris family has constantly produced council members. Since the establishment of the Council of Mage Tower, Leoris, there has never been a time when the head of the Leoris family did not become a member of the Council, and he served as the chairman only four times. The fact that the nickname of the head family of magic is by no means arrogant is revealed here as well.
Ralph Leoris was also a regular member of the Continental Mage Tower Council. Regular members are only a few dozen out of hundreds of members.
After obtaining the qualifications of an associate member, the title of a full member is given only when the academic world publishes a surprising research or achieves a great feat that no one can deny. That’s why there were not a few members who stayed as associate members for life, and it was an auspicious thing to produce regular members even in a decent number of noble families. Of course, the Leoris family is an exception.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
“Agenda No. 75213, The agenda related to today’s lunch was decided by an anonymous vote. According to the results of the vote, today’s dinner has become lamb stew. Do you have any objections?”
Ralph Leoris put his chin on his chin with a sullen expression, thinking about something else.
Today was the day of the council meeting, which happens once a year. The Great Council of the Continental Mage Tower Council was a place where council members dealt with and voted on various agendas and issues.
The Continental Mage Tower Council is an organization on the scale of the entire continent, so it was a pandemonium in which all interests were mixed. Therefore, coordinating and deciding on opinions is an essential task, and it was mandatory to hold a grand meeting once a year to collect opinions fairly.
The venue for this year’s conference was the Kingdom of Leon. Regular members were obliged to attend the general meeting unless there were special circumstances, so Ralph took a full day to attend the meeting. This was also one of the things he had to do as the head of the Leoris family.
“Mutton Stew. It’s okay.”
“What was dinner last year?”
“I don’t even remember.”
“Haaa… ! When will this meeting end?”
The faces of dozens of members seated at the huge round table were full of boredom. The agenda of the meeting was so full of trivial things that I wondered if this was the right thing to deal with at the headquarters of intelligence covering all continents. It was a gap between the image and reality of the Continental Mage Tower Council in the public’s mind.
It was boring, too, for Ralph. He played Rotochess with an imaginary John in his head. The current record was 31 wins and 30 losses. Own weakness
“This is the end of this year’s agenda.”
As Jody Woods, chairman of the Continental Mage Tower Council, spoke while fiddling with his magnifying glasses, quiet cheers erupted from the surroundings. It was a delight to see the torture-like meeting running toward its end.
“However, not everything is over yet. Because there are some special discussions left.”
At the words of Chairman Woods, members including Ralph looked at him with expressions as if saying, ‘What kind of bullsh*t is this?’. Chairman Woods, who was stared at, cleared his throat once and continued.
“Because one of the members requested re-examination of the thesis. We will vote on it here.”
At Chairman Woods’ words, the surroundings were stained with silence. I was at a loss for words on such an out of the blue topic. And many wizards at the same time.
A member’s voice broke the silence.
“Voting on reexamination of papers at a conference. Isn’t that the job of the review body?”
He meant that the conference was not the place to take on trivial matters such as reexamination of thesis. It was a perfectly valid statement, so others showed sympathy. So was Ralph.
“Good point. The Continental Mage Tower Council Conference is not a place to deal with general papers. If it is a ‘normal’ thesis.”
“Are you saying that the papers requested for reexamination are not common?”
“As expected, the intelligence of the people gathered here is so intelligent that this old man can’t match. That’s the correct answer. The thesis requested for review by the member is a diamond-level thesis.”
At the sound of a diamond-level thesis, the meeting hall started to stir.
“Are you requesting reexamination for a diamond-level thesis?”
“What kind of madman….”
“Maybe I lost my head while researching?”
A diamond-level thesis is a thesis that has been directly reviewed by the thesis review body of the Continental Mage Tower Council. Among them, the thesis for which 80% of the 12 expert dissertation reviewers decided to approve was called a diamond-level dissertation.
In the dissertation review organization that gathered only the most picky people in the world, there were only a handful of papers that received approval from more than 80% of the reviewers. The fact that the diamond-level papers left behind by the council’s long history have not yet reached three digits proves it.
Diamond-level papers become the golden standard of the day. Just leaving such a thesis is regarded as a feat that marks a milestone in the magic world, but there was only one wizard who left such a thesis at this meeting.
“Me.”
A man stood up, breaking the tumultuous atmosphere of the meeting room. He was a strange wizard with a rough black beard and an aura of a warrior using an axe.
Unlike his rough appearance, he was recognized as the best wizard in the industry. Otherwise he wouldn’t be here.
“Alexander Bond, a regular member of the Continental Mage Tower Council, formally request a public review.”
His gaze broke his bored expression and turned to a man looking at him. The person his eyes contained was Ralph Leoris, a man with an impressive blazing redness.
“Examination of Sir Ralph Leoris’ dissertation on ‘The healing’.”
—
The Leoris family is called the head family of magic, but not all magic is equally skillful. The Leoris family was a family that specialized in attribute magic among many magics.
Attribute magic has the deepest roots among magic. And the Leoris family was a family that produced countless masters of such attribute magic. Ralph’s daughter, Sara, chose attribute magic under the influence of such family customs.
But Ralph was different. His specialty was healing magic.
Ralph Leoris also originally studied attribute magic under the guidance of his family. However, he showed his eccentric instincts to the fullest in his field of study. From the point of view of attribute magic, he dismantled healing magic and began to study it.
‘The healing’ is a thesis that compiles his experience and knowledge, and it was a masterpiece of his life that he wrote with all his 30s.
– Healing magic in terms of attribute magic?
-If you follow this thesis, you can break the curse that you have not been able to do until now!
-A kid who hasn’t even been taught a paper like this? Huh! Is this the Leoris family?
His research brought about a stir in the continental magic world. Ralph Leoris was recognized by everyone, and his position in the Continental Mage Tower Council, which was an associate member, was instantly upgraded to a full member. It was at this time that people gave him the epithet of ‘the wise man of redemption’. Everyone picked Ralph as the next chairman of the council.
Thesis of Ralph Leoris, called the treasure of this generation.
Alexander Bond, who put it on the thesis examination table, looked at Ralph Leoris with a dry expression. It was impossible even for Ralph to read the emotions in those eyes.
Just like Ralph Leoris, Alexander Bond was a transcendent wizard who reached the heights of the Archmage. His family, the Bond family, was not as good as the Leoris family, but it was a prestigious family that could be counted as one of the magic families.
“Sir Alexander Bond! Shall we regard the opinions publicly raised by Lord Bond as a direct challenge to the authority of the council’s thesis-examination body?”
Terres Brown, a healing mage who is a regular member of the council and a self-proclaimed fan of Ralph Leoris, looked at Bond and said.
In contrast to Alexander Bond, who was more like a warrior or a bandit than a wizard, Teresa Brown was an impressive old gentleman with tall gray hair. But his tone was sharp, like that of a warrior on the verge of battle.
“It’s all right.”
Bond said in a calm voice. The only thing his gaze contained was Ralph Leoris.
“I am not an idiot who leans on authority and cannot see the truth.”
“What are you talking about!? Then, are we such idiots!?”
Terres Brown spoke even more harshly. A hum came from several wizards besides Brown. Woods interrupted by tapping the gavel.
“Sir Brown. We are intellectuals. Know when to speak loudly and when not. Sir Bond. Indecent behavior that provokes others also affects the prestige of the Bond family. Please be considerate of both of you.”
Brown lowered his head at Woods’ words, but Bond still stiffly looked up at Ralph.
“Doesn’t there have to be a legitimate reason to re-examine a thesis approved by the thesis review body?”
Amid the tension, a voice shot like an arrow split the meeting room. It was Coke Wheeler, a master of attribute magic.
His voice wasn’t comfortable, because he was a judge on Ralph Leoris’s Diamond Thesis. He was a believer in Ralph, who left comments close to praise as a judge’s review.
“Of course.”
“Reasons for re-examination include plagiarism, data manipulation, data forgery, etc., But the review body has already reviewed all of them. No one here doubts that Sir Bond is an excellent wizard, but I do not believe that the capacity of the screening body is less than that of Sir Bond.”
“The reason for requesting reexamination is not because of research irregularities.”
“Then what is it for?”
“A more fundamental reason…. Because Sir Ralph Leoris’ thesis contradicts the facts. ‘The Healing’ magically presents completely false information as fact. Therefore, I request a re-examination of the thesis.”
Thump!
Ralph, who had been silently watching the situation until now, got up from his seat, banging his fist on the round table.
Terres Brown and Coke Wheeler, as well as Chairman Woods, were surprised to see Ralph like that. This is because I have never seen a sage who is always relaxed and sometimes flippantly exposed become so angry.
From noble mtl dot com
“Sir Alexander Bond. Can you take responsibility for your words?”
To Ralph’s anger, Bond responded calmly.
“Of course. He can stake the position of a full member of the Continental Mage Tower Council.”
Bond argued that the thesis that put Ralph up here is an illusion. What he attacks is Ralph’s intellect and honor.
When attacking an opponent, you must place the same amount of weight on the opposite scale. This is common sense that penetrates the world.
“I, Ralph Leoris, as a full member of the Continental Tower Council, request an unrestricted public discussion with Sir Alexander Bond, the ‘Adjuster of the Seven Colors’. Right here, right here.”
“Accept it.”
Like that, the two wizards started fighting without swords. And the result was completely different from the thoughts of others in the conference room.
